Tell us about yourself: “I’m an electrician by trade. Started this in my late 20s because I wanted a weekend project.”
If you remember playing with a Tonka Grader as a child, this radio-controlled grader is the big kid version. While it might not be used for actual roadwork, Andrew still had a purpose in mind when he started building it.
Nice project, Andrew! Thanks for sharing it with us!
What is it? It’s an 11-foot long, self-propelled, full RC grader with working hydraulics, a 13 HP gas engine, twin 12V batteries and a 4-foot ATV blade. The wireless controller has a range of up to 1 km. It’s for cleaning snow-filled driveways, and also for playing in an adult sandbox (back yard).
What is the main power source for your project? (e.g. electric motor, gas engine etc.) I used a 13 HP Powerfist gas engine.
How do you control your project? (e.g. hydraulic control valve(s), electric switches etc.) 12V power controls over hydraulic solenoids.
What components are used to perform the work for your project? (e.g. hydraulic cylinder(s), hydraulic motor(s), sprockets, pulleys etc.) I used three hydraulic cylinders, one three-point hitch top link, a small tractor rear end for the main drive with chain to connect the tandem wheels.
If you had to build it again, what would you do differently? If I had to build it again, I would make it a lot smaller. It started as a 1:10 scale diecast and upscaled to almost 1:2 scale.
Which Princess Auto location do you visit most? The Portage Ave store in Winnipeg, MB
