Tell us about yourself: “I love building anything with a small engine on it… from go-karts to scooters and small engine swaps.”
The Bolens Hus-Ski and Diablo Rouge snow vehicles were a unique sight when they came out in the 1960s. Originally manufactured in Montreal, these twin-track machines were a big hit with hunters, ice-fishing enthusiasts, trappers, contractors hauling equipment to remote sites, search & rescue operations, trail groomers… even dog sled trainers! The driver had to ride behind on a sleigh of some sort, while holding the handlebars attached to the motorized front half. There are companies that still produce similar machines today, but Edward decided to repurpose an old snowmobile to make one of his own.
Nice take on the classic machines, Edward! Thanks for sharing your project with us!
What is it? It's an old snowmobile tunnel with the gearbox and track still intact. I fabricated a base frame and engine mounts on the footrests of the tunnel and welded up a handlebar.
What is it used for? I have a giant sled that I kneel in and steer it. You could use it for about anything. Ice fishing, firewood, or just packing a good trail through the bush.
What is the main power source for your project? (e.g. electric motor, gas engine etc.) I use a ProPoint 420cc engine from Princess Auto and I love it. Works great, starts easy, and idles really good.
How do you control your project? (e.g. hydraulic control valve(s), electric switches etc.) Throttle on the handlebars and steer it
What components are used to perform the work for your project? (e.g. hydraulic cylinder(s), hydraulic motor(s), sprockets, pulleys etc.) Centrifugal clutch with chain to sprocket on existing jackshaft
What design/build challenges did you overcome? None, really. Very easy and basic build.
If you had to build it again, what would you do differently? I would get a tunnel with a wider track. It tends to be tippy if you don't know what you’re doing.
Which Princess Auto location do you visit most? Barrie, ON
