Racing Lawnmower

Here’s another riding mower given a new lease on life as a racing machine. An 18 HP engine powers this surprisingly fast little guy. Rob, who shops at our Kitchener store, likes to compete in tractor racing events. It looks like he has the skill and speed to win!

Thanks Rob, for sharing your project with us, and good luck on the track!

A lean, mean, red racing machine.

What is it? A highly modified riding lawnmower for racing with the Southwestern Ontario Lawn Tractor Racing Association (SOLTRA).

What is the main power source for your project? (e.g. electric motor, gas engine etc.) An 18 HP Briggs Intek V-Twin engine.

How do you control your project? (e.g. hydraulic control valve(s), electric switches etc.) I tethered kill switch in case I get thrown off and starter button off a tractor.

What components are used to perform the work for your project? (e.g. hydraulic cylinder(s), hydraulic motor(s), sprockets, pulleys etc.) A combination of pulley, belt, sprocket and chain drive. 1 inch shaft axle with disk brake rotor from a street bike and caliper from a snowmobile. Stock steering has been replaced with custom linkage. 1/4 turn lock to lock.

What design/build challenges did you overcome? Making all parts of the build work together.

If you had to build it again, what would you do differently? I would try to build not as strong and heavy

Which Princess Auto location do you visit most? The one in Kitchener, Ontario.
