Tell us about yourself:“I am a Maintenance Mechanic by trade but now have my own home renovation business. Since the purchase of my first power tool, which was many years ago, I was hooked on building and creating projects from scratch. My wife also changed careers and has made the transition from insurance to dog grooming, which inspired me to build this project for her.”
Dogs make enjoyable pets, and regular grooming is just one of the owner’s responsibilities. Some prefer to do the work themselves, while others turn to a qualified groomer to handle the full spa experience (bathing, ear cleaning, nail clipping, coat trimming, etc.). Mark built a sturdy table that allows his wife to groom dogs at a comfortable height. The large rubber-covered surface accommodates any breed from pocket-sized pooches to the largest tail waggers out there.
Great project, Mark! Thanks for sharing it with us!
What is it?
It’s a hydraulic grooming table allows the groomer to lift larger dogs with ease of the foot operated hydraulic trolley jack.
What is the main power source for your project? (e.g. electric motor, gas engine etc.)
Although no motors are involved, the table lifts and lowers by means of the Big Red 2 ton hydraulic trolley jack.
The groomer controls the height of the table by way of the pumping lift stem. I incorporated a foot platform mounted to the stem, which allows them to lift the table and keep a close eye on the dog itself as the table raises.
The only component used on this project is the Big Red hydraulic jack.
Distancing of the 2x4's to gain maximum height and to allow the table to stay as low as possible was a trial and error process. This project took approximately 15 hours to complete, and many of these hours were spent fine-tuning the lift to achieve a nice transition from the lower position to the top. I wanted it to reach a comfortable height and lower to a height where dogs could easily walk onto it and not be scared.
If I were to build another, I would strongly think of replacing the wood with aluminum. Over time, some of the wood twisted slightly and therefore I had to shave off a bit to prevent any friction. In order to keep the jack from moving, I removed the wheels, inserted a steel rod through the jack frame, and secured the unit to the base. It took a bit of time for my wife to get comfortable with the foot assisted rise mechanism, but overall, the lift allowed her to groom very large dogs without injuring herself.
I visit the one located in Ottawa on Ages drive.
