Tell us about yourself:“I am an electrician by trade but grew up on a farm in northern Alberta. I have always been into off-roading, camping, and really anything that drives. I am currently building a ‘90 Nissan D21 drift truck that I’m sure I will be getting stuff from PA.”
Small campers definitely have their charms and are more popular than ever, but not everyone can afford one. If the rear half of a pickup truck can be turned into a cargo trailer, then a vehicle can be repurposed into a cozy camping trailer. That’s exactly what Mark did when he chopped the schnoz off a Jeep Cherokee to modify it with a towing bar, interior/exterior storage, and sleeping area.
Nice job, Mark! Thanks for sharing your project with us!
What is it? I call it the Chero-Trailer. It is an overland trailer made from a 96 Jeep Cherokee, built to go anywhere. I had a large camper that wasn't able to go to the areas that me and my son like to go camping, so I got the body of the Jeep from a friend and started building this. The interior is all gutted; the front half is the sleeping area and the back hatch is the cooking/storage area. I did the exterior work last winter and I’m building the interior better than this. Currently it can only sleep two inside, but I will be saving up for a roof top tent when I can.
What design/build challenges did you come across and solve? There were a lot actually. I didn't know there was a community of trailer builders until I was almost completed. I just built it how I wanted to use it.
The Jeep was in OK shape, but I did have to redo a lot of the panels and paint. The issues I had were that I had never done anything like this before, but I did a lot of research and a lot of shopping for materials on what I should use to get it done.
If you had to build it again, what would you do differently? If I were to do it again I would honestly do it the same way. I got a lot of my metal materials from Princess Auto, and still have to complete the interior this winter and will be shopping at due to the vast selection of lighting, and other items.
Which Princess Auto location do you visit most? I use the Calgary south location almost daily, even if it’s only to window shop!
