"During the summer I work as a carney for Wonder Shows Winnipeg. I have been a carney for about 15 years. I enjoy fishing, boating and just about anything outdoors - being inside drives me crazy. I also enjoy blacksmithing, working on old stationary engines and steam engines."
When Allan isn't busy assembling, inspecting, operating and tearing down carnival rides, he spends the winter months doing commercial snow clearing jobs for homeowners. He purchased a plow blade and designed his own attachment for his pickup truck, using hydraulic components from our Driveline section.
Looks like it does the trick, Allan! Thanks for sharing your project with us
Q: What is it?
A: Snowplow that goes on front of my truck. I mounted the blade on a 97 Dodge 4x4. The blade was pre-made by SNOWSPORT®; it was a manual lift which I changed to electric/hydraulic using the power pack and hydraulic cylinders from Princess Auto. I'm a SNOWSPORT® dealer for their snowplow blades, and the only one authorized by them to make the changes to their plow.
Q: What is the main power source for your project? (e.g. electric motor, gas engine etc.)
A: Electric hydraulic motor
Q: How do you control your project? (e.g. hydraulic control valve(s), electric switches etc.)
A: The switches I used were the ones that came with the unit.
Q: What components are used to perform the work for your project? (e.g. hydraulic cylinder(s), hydraulic motor(s), sprockets, pulleys etc.)
A: Hydraulic cylinders hoses 12V electric pump
Q: What design/build challenges were overcome?
A: Lifting the unit inside the truck. One design I had to change was putting a box around the hydraulic unit or snow would come over and disconnect the electric controls.
Q: If you had to build it again, what would you do differently?
A: If I would build another one, I would make a different hook-up to the truck. I used a single receiver hitch - I would make two receivers. I would also use a different lift. I find the blade too light - in heavy snow it wants to ride up and float over the snow.
Q: Which Princess Auto location do you visit most?
A: Panet Road store, Winnipeg MB
