Famboni

Tell us about yourself:“A proud grandparent with a very talented neighbour named Scott. We love to support our grandkids in everything they do, and this was a project that took a summer to do, and was well worth doing. We called it a Famboni because it was for the love of family.”

There’s nothing more Canadian than kids playing hockey on an outdoor rink. Dan and his buddy Scott built this mini Zamboni to make the ice surface nice and smooth for everyone to enjoy!

Great job, guys! Thanks for sharing your project with us!

A mini Zamboni for the family ice rink.

What is it? My neighbour Scott and I built an ice-flooding machine for my daughter and son-in-law's very large backyard rink where their three kids skate and play hockey all winter. We did it for them and my other two grandkids. It is functional with heated water, headlights and accent lights. It is a pull-around and plugs in to keep everything heated and to charge the battery that controls the lights.

What is the main power source for your project? (e.g. electric motor, gas engine etc.) 110V plug-in with a battery within the unit for the headlamps and the accent lights.

How do you control your project? (e.g. hydraulic control valve(s), electric switches etc.) Switches control the lights and valve shutoffs for the water flow.

What components are used to perform the work for your project? (e.g. hydraulic cylinder(s), hydraulic motor(s), sprockets, pulleys etc.) Battery, battery warmer, copper pipe, heat wrap, water tank with warm up wrap, battery charger, water shutoff, plug-in…. all starting with Princess Auto pull wagon as the base.

What design/build challenges were overcome? Design was as we went along. Challenges were to ensure it would not freeze and that the water was always warm. We had to run hot water to the yard for filling the tank as the ice was being flooded.

If you had to build it again, what would you do differently? No, the completed product was perfect and very functional.

Which Princess Auto location do you visit most? West Edmonton, AB
