Here’s a garden tractor restored to working condition, this time with a few improvements. Bill swapped the gas engine for a diesel one and upgraded the hydraulic system. Now this ’68 John Deere is ready for anything!
Great job, Bill! Thanks for sharing your restoration project with us!
What is it? This is originally a 1968 John Deere 112 Garden Tractor that was purchased non-running. A 10 HP diesel engine was swapped in to replace the old Tecumseh 10HP engine. Body and frame were modified to fit the physically larger engine. Hydraulics were revamped and upgraded. I use it for lawn mowing, operating a chipper/shredder, snowplow blade.
What is the main power source for your project? (e.g. electric motor, gas engine etc.) An All Power 10 HP Diesel engine.
How do you control your project? (e.g. hydraulic control valve(s), electric switches etc.) Mechanical factory PTO for power driven accessories. Hydraulics controlled by BLB BM20 4-spool valve with custom linkages to dash tower levers.
What components are used to perform the work for your project? (e.g. hydraulic cylinder(s), hydraulic motor(s), sprockets, pulleys etc.) Haldex hydraulic pump, JD cylinder for deck lift, and a Toyota/Denso alternator for charging, since the diesel charging system was insufficient.
What design/build challenges did you overcome? Getting everything to fit on a small tractor and maintain a factory appearance. Locating the hydraulic valve under the seat and building linkages was the biggest challenge.
Which Princess Auto location do you visit most? The Calgary South store.
